Investigating Fraud in Truck Driver Licensing: A Joint Effort

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Department of Transportation (DOT) are actively investigating truck driver schools suspected of fraudulent practices. This investigation focuses on improper certifications and falsified records, primarily concerning the issuance of commercial driver’s licenses to non-citizens.

The initiative follows multiple fatal truck accidents involving undocumented immigrants, highlighting safety concerns on American roads. Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy recently hinted at a significant fraud crackdown announcement. In a post on social media platform X, Duffy shared the plan for an ‘unprecedented fraud crackdown.’

The announcement indicated a collaborative effort between various departments including DHS, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Department of Justice, and the White House Task Force to Eliminate Fraud.

The forthcoming announcement lacks specific details concerning the location, timing, and types of fraud to be addressed. There is no information on whether arrests have occurred.

The Trump administration has broadened its efforts by establishing the White House Task Force to Eliminate Fraud in March, targeting fraudulent activities across federal benefit programs.

In collaboration with the DHS, the Department of Transportation has intensified oversight of fraud and safety violations within the commercial trucking industry. Allegations involve improperly issued commercial driver’s licenses, fraudulent driving schools, and unvetted foreign drivers.

The Department of Justice has initiated a National Fraud Enforcement Division to investigate taxpayer dollar misuse.

Since July, the agencies have been scrutinizing 75 commercial driving schools for potential fraud, examining falsified training records and improper certifications. They have also conducted roadside operations targeting unqualified foreign commercial drivers.
