Inglewood Mayor Faces Allegations Amid Political Turmoil

The community of Inglewood has experienced significant unrest following allegations against its mayor, James T. Butts Jr., claiming inappropriate conduct at a local event. The mayor strongly refutes these accusations, labeling them as politically motivated.

Allegations and Reactions

Mayor Butts addressed these claims in an emotional press conference. He is accused of inappropriately touching a high school student during a group photo at the city’s ‘Votechella’ event. He was joined by regional leaders outside Inglewood City Hall, where he claimed these accusations are part of a larger political struggle involving the city and its entertainment venue operators.

Standing beside two large signs that read, “Stop the lies. Stop the billionaires,” Butts argued that local activists are driving these accusations.

The student involved has not publicly spoken about the incident, and her family has been advised by legal counsel not to comment, according to a representative. The representative also did not disclose who is conducting the investigation.

Press Conference and Accusations

During the press conference, Mayor Butts suggested the accusations are a racially charged smear campaign, portraying him negatively. He pointed out the absence of any formal complaint from the student or her family, suggesting the attacks are baseless. He left without fielding questions from the assembled media.

Political activists brought these allegations to light, though none claimed to have witnessed the event. Some attendees reported seeing the student appearing uncomfortable as the mayor allegedly drew her closer for a photo.

Local activist Najee Ali emphasized the need to support young individuals who speak out, stating, “It’s our job to protect them.”

Legal and Political Context

Mayor Butts indicated legal actions against the activists involved in spreading the accusations. He identified some activists as city council candidates and opponents of Measure BB, a local ballot that would reduce commercial advertising revenues.

Butts, who has led Inglewood since 2010, credits his leadership for significant city improvements, including financial stability and infrastructure enhancements. His growing profile coincides with Inglewood’s development as a hub for major sports teams.

Support and Further Allegations

State Assemblymember Tina McKinnor supported Butts, acknowledging the ongoing election season and the need for responsible handling of serious allegations. She highlighted the lack of police reports or official complaints.

Inglewood City Attorney Rick Olivarez confirmed no complaints had been filed with his office. Meanwhile, the Inglewood Unified School District remained reserved about any ongoing investigations.

Activists Ali and Earl Ofari Hutchinson submitted a letter to request a criminal investigation into Butts, citing eyewitness accounts.

Yolanda Davidson voiced longstanding concerns about Butts, citing this incident as part of a broader pattern of problematic behavior. Past allegations against the mayor include dismissed lawsuits from former aides accusing him of harassment and retaliation.
