Influence of Government Decisions on Gas Prices

Gasoline prices are determined by the principles of supply and demand. This basic economic principle should guide the understanding of price changes in fuel costs. Recent statements by President Donald Trump suggest a different perspective.

This week, Trump criticized major energy companies, Chevron and ExxonMobil, for earning substantial profits during the conflict in Iran. Chevron announced a record profit of $12.1 billion for the quarter. Meanwhile, ExxonMobil reported $14.5 billion, nearly doubling their profit from the same period last year. Trump’s comments imply that these companies are responsible for high fuel prices.

However, the reality is that fuel prices are influenced more by political decisions made in Washington, D.C., than by the headquarters of these oil giants. Government policies can have significant impacts on the energy sector, affecting both supply and demand. These impacts can ultimately lead to changes in fuel prices experienced by consumers.
