Illinois GOP Criticizes the Obama Presidential Center’s Use of Public Land

Illinois Republican Party Chairman Bob Grogan has raised concerns regarding the Obama Presidential Center. Grogan asserts that the center functions more as a political operation for the Obama Foundation rather than as a traditional presidential library.

The center’s recent opening on Juneteenth was marked by a dedication ceremony that highlighted the historical lands occupied by American Indian tribes. Obama Foundation CEO Valerie Jarrett acknowledged during the ceremony that the center stands on land formerly inhabited by these tribes. This acknowledgment is reflected throughout the center’s permanent displays, emphasizing the historical significance of Indigenous peoples’ land.

The Obama Foundation acknowledges the sovereign Indigenous peoples who have, since time immemorial, inhabited and stewarded the lands many of us call home.

While land acknowledgments are common in various institutions, critics argue they serve as symbolic gestures, often overlooking the controversy surrounding the center itself. The center resides on public land that the City of Chicago transferred to the Obama Foundation for a nominal $10 fee. Grogan argues this transfer was made from taxpayers and not from Native American lands.

Critics highlight the transformation of the project over time from a presidential library to an expansive facility serving the Obama Foundation. The center occupies 19.3 acres in Jackson Park, Chicago, an area shaped by public works after the Great Chicago Fire. Grogan underscores this, stating that the land created by rubble and landfill projects rightfully belongs to Chicago taxpayers.

The project’s significant financial implications also draw scrutiny. Construction costs are nearing $1 billion, with substantial taxpayer-funded infrastructure improvements required around Jackson Park. The Obama Foundation’s promise to establish a $470 million endowment to protect taxpayers from future costs remains unfulfilled.

Additionally, while the center promotes economic opportunities and support for minority-owned businesses in Chicago’s South Side, a recent investigation reveals that subcontractors, including minority-owned ones, claim they are owed millions for their work on the project.

The Obama Foundation has not provided comment on these issues.
