Ian Somerhalder’s Journey from Hollywood to Farming

Ian Somerhalder, known for his roles in ‘Lost’ and ‘The Vampire Diaries,’ has transitioned away from acting to focus on regenerative agriculture. This approach aims to rejuvenate soil health and restore ecosystems.

In an interview with Fox News Digital, Somerhalder discussed his pivotal trip to Zimbabwe. He observed how regenerative farming could transform degraded landscapes and ecosystems. During this trip, he stayed in military tents and learned firsthand about the potential for grasslands to act as carbon sinks.

Somerhalder’s environmental documentary ‘Groundswell,’ directed by Josh and Rebecca Tickell, was released recently. It is the third part of a series that includes ‘Kiss the Ground’ (2020) and ‘Common Ground’ (2023). These documentaries emphasize the importance of regenerative agriculture.

Born and raised in rural Louisiana, Somerhalder comes from a long line of farmers. His upbringing exposed him to both regenerative and conventional farming practices. After achieving success in Hollywood, he connected with Allan Savory, a leader in regenerative agriculture, who invited him to Zimbabwe.

While documenting land restoration efforts, Somerhalder immersed himself in the local environment and connected deeply with the principles of regenerative agriculture. He spent time on Savory’s property, capturing footage that contributed to the documentary ‘Kiss the Ground.’ This film sparked conversations around regenerative farming.

Somerhalder appears in and executive produced the documentaries ‘Common Ground’ and ‘Groundswell.’ These films examine the U.S. food system and further explore regenerative agriculture.

Reflecting on his shift from acting to advocacy, Somerhalder confesses to missing the camaraderie on film sets. He noted a culture shift in the industry, leading him to pursue new avenues of environmental advocacy.

Currently, Somerhalder spends much time on a farm shared with his wife, Nikki Reed. Together, they focus on living sustainably and raising their family, embracing a lifestyle connected to nature.

Somerhalder praises Reed’s commitment to the land. He recounts their shared time managing a farm, demonstrating the powerful bond and dedication to sustainable practices.

Somerhalder argues that family life is enriched by being present and connecting with nature. He advocates for reducing plastics in homes and gardens, encouraging regenerative agriculture practices.

As he looks to the future, Somerhalder remains optimistic. He believes that new generations will prioritize regenerative agriculture, reconnect with nature, and find balance between technology and environmental stewardship.
