Hunter Mahan stepped away from the PGA Tour in 2021, expressing feelings of burnout from the relentless demands of professional golf. During the past five years, he embraced family life, began coaching high school golf, and recently reignited his passion for the sport in a new way.
Mahan, with six PGA Tour victories, ventured into the digital realm of golf content in June. He posts videos documenting his journey back into golf, instructional tips, and other engaging content. His Instagram following has grown to over 55,000.
“My wife took some videos and mentioned, ‘You should start playing more, I can see you’re interested,’” Mahan recounted in an interview with OutKick. “I went to the course the next day, hit record on the first video, and shared my thoughts. The response was incredibly positive and overwhelming. We were surprised by the reception.”
In addition to exploring golf content, Mahan is contemplating a return to competition on the PGA Tour Champions. He has over five years until he turns 50 and becomes eligible for the senior circuit. His competitive drive is rekindling, and he is considering a future in professional play once again.
“I am exploring options, trying to figure out my place in golf today,” Mahan explained. “I’ve got over five years until the senior tour. Competing in the Champions Tour could be enjoyable, as several friends who played golf with me will turn 50 around the same time.”
Mahan is taking time to explore his interests while considering the best ways to share golf content. He appreciates the insight gained from conversations within the golf community, both professional and non-professional. The process has been rewarding for him.
Mahan, who ranked in the Top Five of the Official World Golf Ranking in 2012, would immediately qualify for the PGA Tour Champions upon turning 50 due to his six Tour wins. The former Oklahoma State star claimed his first victory at the 2007 Travelers Championship, with his last win at The Barclays in 2014.
