How ‘Real Housewives’ Became a Template for Reality TV

Vicki Gunvalson’s journey as a reality TV star began two decades ago with her participation in The Real Housewives of Orange County. At the time, few anticipated her rise to become a defining figure in the genre.

Known as the ‘O.G. of the O.C.’ for being a debut-season cast member with the longest tenure, Gunvalson’s character is marked by emotional outbursts and a workaholic drive. She manages an insurance business in California. Her antics, including a keg stand and an accident involving her leg, kept audiences engaged during her first 13 years on TV.

The show’s original producer, Scott Dunlop, considered the project a social experiment, documenting the lives of these women. Gunvalson recalls, “We have no idea what’s going to happen. It’s a documentary of your life.”

The Real Housewives of Orange County chronicles the lives, conflicts, and friendships of suburban women in California. Its formula not only led to its own success but birthed ten American spinoffs, related businesses, and extensive commentary on the franchise’s impact.

Gunvalson exited the show in 2019 but returned part-time in 2023. In November, during the BravoCon reality festival, Andy Cohen, the show’s executive producer, invited her to join the show’s 20th anniversary season. He expressed surprise at Gunvalson’s enduring presence in the series, saying, “As much as her life has changed, she has not changed.” The new season debuts on July 9.
