Healthcare Shortages in Southeastern State

The southeastern region of the state is experiencing a critical shortage of physicians. This scarcity results in longer wait times for patients needing care.

On a day in February, a young student in rural North Carolina suffered a severe allergic reaction at school. With no previous health issues, the urgency was clear. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) quickly arrived and, complying with the parent’s wishes, set out for a large medical facility in Durham, which is over 30 minutes away.

During transit, the child’s condition deteriorated sharply. The paramedics faced a critical decision. They rerouted to a nearby hospital in Roxboro, which was only a few minutes from their location. At the emergency department there, medical staff administered several medications and provided essential support to stabilize her condition and save her life.
