A group of renewable energy investors recently achieved a significant victory in Texas by spending over $1 million to defeat a key opponent of renewable energy. This group, known as the Invest in Tomorrow Coalition PAC, now plans to extend its influence nationally, aiming to support Republicans who back wind and solar energy initiatives.
Thomas Matzzie, a leader of this coalition, stated the group aims to build a pro-clean-energy majority in Congress. This initiative is funded by renewable energy developers and philanthropists, with strong backing from Chris Larsen, a co-founder of the cryptocurrency platform Ripple.
The coalition celebrated publicly after Representative Chip Roy, known for opposing renewable energy incentives, lost a runoff in the Republican primary for Texas attorney general. Last year, Roy led efforts to eliminate tax credits for wind, solar, electric vehicles, and other clean energy productions established under the Biden administration. His primary opponent, Mayes Middleton, a conservative state senator, criticized Roy for his lack of loyalty to former President Trump. The coalition highlighted these criticisms by spending $1.1 million on advertisements that emphasized Roy’s conflicts with Trump, suggesting he was ‘not MAGA enough for Texas.’
With $15 million in funds, the investors are positioned to make a national impact by supporting candidates who align with their clean energy goals.
