However, bureaucratic hurdles with the city impeded him. Eventually, he was frustrated to discover that the property was sold to a developer for affordable housing before he could proceed with expanding his restaurant.
While Strauss supports the creation of affordable housing, he is concerned about the imbalance in the system. As a result, he abandoned his new restaurant plans to open a grocery store, expressing uncertainty about the future of his current establishment, known for its Jewish American-inspired menu.
Many restaurant owners in Los Angeles share Strauss’s concerns. The industry has faced consecutive challenges, including the pandemic, Hollywood strikes, wildfires, and immigration enforcement raids. These disruptions have significantly impacted business operations.
“Their plan to destroy this entire block of businesses moved much faster than my attempt to turn an existing retail space into a sandwich shop,” Strauss said.
As the city prepares for major tourism events like the World Cup and the 2028 Summer Olympics, the struggles of the local restaurant industry have become a focal point in the mayoral race. Candidates are promising to reform city governance to aid mom-and-pop restaurants.
