Gov. Newsom Signs Bills to Enhance LGBTQ Protections in California

On Saturday, Governor Gavin Newsom signed a series of bills boosting protections for LGBTQ individuals in California. These measures were motivated by recent federal actions perceived as threatening these communities’ support.

Among the six bills, one package offers housing, employment, and additional assistance to military personnel discharged due to former President Trump’s ban on transgender individuals in the military. Assemblymember Chris Ward (D-San Diego), the author of Assembly Bill 1775, expressed gratitude to Gov. Newsom, emphasizing California’s commitment to supporting unjustly discharged veterans.

Other legislation signed by Newsom strengthens privacy by restricting the sharing of sexual orientation and gender identity data. It also mandates healthcare providers to inform the California attorney general when subpoenas target state-protected healthcare activities.

Additionally, a new law improves accessibility to PrEP and PEP medications, critical in preventing HIV infection.

Newsom’s office issued a press release criticizing previous administrative efforts as harmful to the LGBTQ community by misusing medical records against service members and civilians, asserting California’s firm stance against such measures.

The California Legislative LGBTQ Caucus prioritized the bills Newsom enacted. Since assuming office in 2019, Newsom has signed numerous bills to bolster LGBTQ protections. His office highlighted the allocation of $66 million in this year’s state budget for gender-affirming care and abortion access.

State Senator Sabrina Cervantes (D-Riverside), chair-elect of the LGBTQ Caucus, lauded the legislative accomplishments, appreciating Governor Newsom for endorsing these critical bills. She noted that this progress illustrates the achievements possible when working collectively toward a California where LGBTQ+ individuals and their families can enjoy increased safety, opportunity, and dignity.
