Gov. Newsom Defers to Harris in Potential 2028 Presidential Bid

Gov. Gavin Newsom expressed that he would not seek the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028 if Kamala Harris decides to run. This was stated during an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper, highlighting his respect for the former vice president. Newsom conveyed that he would not want to create competition by entering the race if Harris participates.

Newsom suggested that running against Harris would not be beneficial, noting a significant overlap in their supporter base. He indicated that facing off could lead to divided support among their common backers in California.

The prospect of Harris making another presidential bid has been a major topic of discussion among Democrats, especially after her previous loss to President Trump in 2024. While Newsom and Harris have shown interest in the 2028 presidential race, Harris has not clearly stated her intentions. In a recent podcast interview, she focused on her current efforts to assist Democrats in winning upcoming midterm elections.

Despite numerous polls presenting Harris as a leading contender for 2028, some Democrats question if a new campaign by her would energize party voters. Several California donors have expressed hesitance in supporting Harris, with some considering Newsom a more appealing candidate.

The Democratic primary landscape is changing, especially with South Carolina’s selection as the first primary state for the party. This decision might favor Harris if she can secure support from South Carolina’s Black voters.

Newsom and Harris have shared the political stage but have never directly competed against each other. Newsom remarked previously that he has always respected Harris’s ambitions and would let fate decide if they run against each other.

In recent developments, Newsom made a visit to South Carolina, often seen as preparation for a presidential bid. During his CNN interview, he affirmed that both he and Harris have support networks with significant overlap. Newsom emphasized that both running could be advantageous for other candidates, as it might divide their support.

The discussion was part of a segment filmed in Montana, where Newsom was spending time on a ranch owned by his in-laws. Newsom highlighted the need for a prospective candidate to assess whether they embody the current political climate, emphasizing the importance of self-awareness before deciding to run.
