George E. Johnson: Pioneer in Black-Owned Business

George E. Johnson, a renowned figure in the hair-care industry, passed away on Monday in Chicago at the age of 99. He was a pioneering entrepreneur who transformed his humble beginnings into a significant legacy.

Mr. Johnson began his journey from a sharecropper’s cabin and rose to become the founder of the first Black-owned company listed on a major American stock exchange. His company, Johnson Products Company, was well-known for its products such as Ultra Sheen and Afro Sheen, which played a crucial role in the lives of African American consumers. These products helped him amass substantial wealth.

Beyond his contributions to the beauty industry, Johnson also influenced popular culture. His company’s sponsorship of the hit television dance show “Soul Train” further cemented his impact on American culture. His business success and cultural influence made him one of the wealthiest African Americans at a time when high earnings from sports, entertainment, and corporate roles were less common.

In addition to his hair-care empire, George E. Johnson contributed to the financial world by co-founding the Independence Bank of Chicago. He served as its chairman until its sale in 1995, helping establish it as one of the first and largest Black-owned banks in the United States.

His passing was confirmed by his wife, Madeline Murphy Rabb, who noted that respiratory illness was the cause. Johnson’s life and achievements remain a testament to his innovation and dedication to advancing opportunities for African Americans.

A full obituary will be available soon, providing more details about his life and legacy.
