Freshman Dallas Bowen Shines for Hanover Central Softball Team

Freshman shortstop Dallas Bowen has quickly made a significant impact for Hanover Central’s softball team. Senior catcher and Jacksonville State recruit Sienna Stilley speaks highly of Bowen’s contributions, saying, “I choose her every single time. Whether it’s a game-winning hit or a crucial play at short, she’s the one I’m going to pick. Every. Single. Time.”

Bowen, although only a freshman, displays confidence and skill as if she’s a seasoned player. According to Stilley, “She is incredibly hardworking and talented. Beyond her skills on the field, she’s one of the most genuine individuals you can meet. Her presence alone can uplift everyone’s spirits.”

The Wildcats boast a 25-6 record, having won the Northwest Crossroads Conference title and ranking 10th in the state coaches poll. They are set to face No. 7 New Palestine, which holds a 24-7 record, in the Class 3A state championship game at Purdue’s Bittinger Stadium on Friday, 4:30 p.m.

Bowen’s performance is noteworthy. She is batting .371 with six home runs, a team-high four triples, five doubles, 28 RBIs, 38 runs scored, and 10 stolen bases. Her recent three-run homer in the semistate final against East Noble paved the way for Hanover Central’s victory.

Hanover Central coach Sam Antkiewicz appreciates Bowen’s addition to the team, expressing, “It’s just perfect timing and bittersweet. I graduated my daughter, who played shortstop last year and helped us reach the state championship game. It was sad to see her go, but it’s been fantastic to see Dallas fit right in.”

Bowen has embraced her role in helping the team aim for their first title since winning the Class 2A state championship in 2002. Despite losing to Indianapolis Cathedral in last year’s final, the Wildcats have their eyes on the prize.

“I know the team has my back,” Bowen said. “Even if I’m momentarily down, someone will pick me up. You never feel isolated; the team is always there.”

Stilley sees Bowen as an inspirational teammate. “Even on off days, she’s the first to encourage others,” stated Stilley. “Her dedication to becoming a stronger player, both mentally and physically, is refreshing.”

Bowen follows in the footsteps of her older brothers, Drayk and Dylan. Drayk Bowen, a future Notre Dame senior linebacker, made history as Northwest Indiana’s only Mr. Football and won the Butkus Award. Dylan, a recent Hanover Central graduate and Oklahoma State recruit, is a four-year shortstop starter and may soon join the MLB ranks.

Dallas Bowen cherishes her sibling dynamic. “It’s motivating,” she said. “Their successes push me, and I aspire to reach similar heights.” She aspires to play competitively at colleges like Texas, Florida, or Oklahoma.

Stilley believes in Bowen’s potential. “She has all the tools to become an exceptional athlete, but she needs to believe it,” she noted. “Her achievements make me proud, knowing how hard she works. She’s resilient and understands the role she plays.”

Barely into her high school career, Bowen is determined to excel. Hanover Central looks forward to the challenge against a strong New Palestine team with six state titles under its belt.

“It’s an incredible experience,” Bowen shared. “Competing with these girls in such a setting is exciting. Our team’s unity makes this journey enjoyable. We’ve always pushed each other, stayed competitive, and never given up.”
