Leading the polls for the Democratic nomination for Wisconsin governor, Hong faced questions from Kaitlan Collins about a past social media post urging the cancellation of Thanksgiving.
During her appearance on “The Source with Kaitlan Collins,” Collins queried Hong, “Do you still believe that Thanksgiving should be canceled?” This inquiry followed a 2020 post where Hong suggested the holiday should cease to be celebrated. Hong defended her chef background, emphasizing the importance of community gatherings: “I always think my hospitality background in owning a restaurant for seven, eight years, that bringing folks around the table to share conversation and build community is always a good thing.”
Hong acknowledged the holiday’s painful history for many, stating, “Thanksgiving is also a time that’s incredibly painful for many people in our communities.” She emphasized the need for evolving views and expressed hope that her culinary experience would benefit her potential governorship by fostering inclusive dialogues.
The controversial post, now deleted, compared the pandemic to Thanksgiving, framing both as events marked by significant indigenous deaths. “Cancel Thanksgiving. Should have done this in 1621,” she had written. Hong elaborated on historical grievances related to colonialism, mentioning the spread of smallpox which devastated indigenous populations.
Hong’s campaign clarified her stance, stating she does not seek to abolish the holiday but encourages discussion on its implications. Her social media history, including past anxiety expressed over dining experiences, showcases her often polarizing views.
Receiving endorsements from national progressive figures, such as Hasan Piker and Reps. Ilhan Omar and Ro Khanna, Hong maintains a lead in the Democratic primary. Her policy positions align with other progressive leaders, including New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
