Jeffrey Donaldson, a former influential political leader in Northern Ireland, was recently found guilty of 18 counts of child sex abuse, including rape. This verdict was delivered after a jury trial at Newry Crown Court, located south of Belfast. Donaldson led the Democratic Unionist Party and supported Northern Ireland’s union with the United Kingdom.
Donaldson’s influence became significant during Northern Ireland’s Troubles. He held the record as the longest-serving member of Parliament in the region before suddenly resigning amid a police investigation in 2024.
The charges against Donaldson were based on allegations of sexual abuse involving two victims between 1985 and 2000. These charges were officially filed in March 2024, prompting his resignation from his party leadership role. The Democratic Unionist Party announced his suspension, citing “allegations of a historical nature” in a statement that is no longer available online.
The trial also involved Donaldson’s wife, Eleanor Donaldson, who was accused of aiding and abetting the abuse. Although charged, she was declared unfit to stand trial. Both denied all allegations against them. Reports state that Jeffrey Donaldson remained expressionless as the verdict was announced. He is currently in custody, awaiting sentencing.
