Florida State’s Struggles Under Mike Norvell

Florida State’s Struggles Under Mike Norvell

Florida State University’s recent football performance has sparked controversy among fans and analysts. Despite securing a 17-point win against New Mexico State, the Seminoles’ showing was perceived as unsatisfactory, with many expressing disappointment over the current state under head coach Mike Norvell.

Since the start of 2024, Norvell holds an 8-17 record, a significant drop from previous seasons. The 31.5-point spread against a less formidable opponent has only fueled dissatisfaction among Seminoles supporters.

Recent Changes

There was a time when Norvell and the Seminoles appeared to be on an upward trajectory. They achieved a 23-4 stretch during 2022-2023, which included an ACC Championship and consecutive top-10 finishes. Dominant victories over rivals like Miami and Florida marked this period as a golden era for the team. However, the current scenario is drastically different.

The Impact of Jordan Travis

Much of the focus has shifted to Jordan Travis, a player seen by many as a crucial element in Norvell’s success. Travis, a one-time conference champion and two-time All-ACC selection, played a pivotal role in Florida State’s achievements. His performance helped the team average 38.8 points per game, significantly higher than the 14.3 per game they managed without him.

Travis’s absence following an injury in 2023 led to a drastic decline in team performance, underscoring his importance to the Seminoles. Even with talented players like Jared Verse, Braden Fiske, Keon Coleman, and Jammie Robinson moving to professional rosters, Travis’s role as the driving force was clear.

Challenges and Failures

Following Travis’s departure, the Seminoles faced challenges. Their performance dropped, including a narrow escape against Florida and a loss to Louisville in the ACC title game. The subsequent year saw Florida State finishing with a 2-10 record, despite acquiring new players.

Under Travis and Norvell, the Seminoles had a 29-10 record. Examining Norvell’s overall 39-34 record at Florida State indicates Travis’s critical contribution to the team’s success. Travis’s exceptional play often compensated for less effective strategies, showcasing his importance.

While Jordan Travis might not be the greatest college player, his contributions to Florida State are undeniable. Norvell’s rumored consideration for coaching roles at prestigious programs like Alabama in the past highlights Travis’s impact on his reputation.

Should Norvell and Travis cross paths again, a gesture of gratitude, like footing the dinner bill, would be fitting, emphasizing Travis’s role in Norvell’s tenure at Florida State.
