Fetterman Criticizes Democrats Over Supreme Court Immigration Ruling Defiance

Senator John Fetterman from Pennsylvania has voiced significant criticism toward the Democratic Party over its lack of response to New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s decision to defy a Supreme Court ruling. According to Fetterman, this defiance could lead to a constitutional crisis, highlighting perceived inconsistencies within his party.

Senator Fetterman emphasized the importance of adhering to Supreme Court decisions to maintain democratic integrity. He expressed concern over the apparent absence of outrage from fellow Democrats regarding Mamdani’s stance against the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold President Trump’s authority to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitian and Syrian migrants.

In an appearance on the program “Saturday in America,” Fetterman noted that while Democrats previously warned about potential constitutional crises under Trump, their reaction to Mamdani’s statement suggested a departure from those concerns. Fetterman stated, “I haven’t seen the same level of alarm now that the mayor of New York is proclaiming defiance of the Supreme Court ruling,” during his discussion with host Kayleigh McEnany.

His comments came after the Supreme Court provided the Trump administration with two legal victories related to immigration. In the first case, Mullin v. Al Otro Lado, the court ruled against asylum applications from migrants turned away at the U.S. border. In the second, Mullin v. Doe, it allowed the revocation of TPS for Haitian and Syrian nationals, while legal challenges are ongoing.

These rulings have given the Trump administration a pathway to limit asylum claims and proceed with cancelling temporary protections for certain migrants. In response, Mamdani declared his administration’s refusal to comply with the Supreme Court’s decision in a video statement.

Fetterman has cautioned against the increasing influence of far-left politicians like Mamdani within the Democratic Party. This issue has also been part of broader discussions involving other political figures such as Maine Senate candidate Graham Planter, Los Angeles mayoral candidate Nithya Raman, and candidates in Washington, D.C., and New York City, reflecting a noticeable shift leftward within the party.
