A former college swimmer from California has been charged in relation to a deadly attack at a Maui resort. Authorities say the incident occurred on August 5, leading to the death of 63-year-old security guard Michael Dyer.
Incident Details
Surveillance footage shows a naked man approaching Dyer’s office at a condominium resort in Lahaina, Hawaii, around 1:45 a.m. The suspect, identified as Legend Storer, 20, allegedly assaulted Dyer and then fled the scene on foot.
About an hour later, at approximately 3:02 a.m., police received a report of a nude man wandering in a nearby Kahana neighborhood. Officers found and detained Storer, who had several abrasions, and he was subsequently taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center for evaluation.
Charges and Court Proceedings
Authorities charged Storer with second-degree murder, first-degree burglary involving a dangerous instrument, and indecent exposure. Court records show that he pleaded not guilty to all charges on August 7.
At a court hearing, prosecutors ensured Storer was held without bail, while his attorney’s request for nominal bail was denied.
Victim and Aftermath
Michael Dyer, who had been working as a security guard at the Sands of Kahana, was discovered unresponsive at the resort around 5:31 a.m. He was pronounced dead at the scene. A GoFundMe set up by Dyer’s family and friends indicates he was married to his wife, Joy, for 26 years.

Storer, a former swimmer for Concordia University Irvine in California, was listed as a freshman breaststroke and sprint swimmer on the 2024-25 roster. His profile indicates he graduated from Maui Preparatory Academy in 2024, where he achieved recognition in the Maui Interscholastic League.
