Everett Wess Wins Democratic Senate Nomination in Alabama

Former Judge Everett Wess has secured the Democratic Senate nomination in Alabama, a state known for its Republican leanings, in the race to replace Republican Senator Tommy Tuberville. Tuberville is running for governor this year.

Wess triumphed over small business owner Dakarai Larriett in the Democratic Senate runoff, as reported by the Associated Press. Wess and Larriett were the top contenders in last month’s primary, which featured four candidates. Neither candidate received more than 50% of the vote, leading to the runoff election held on Tuesday.

Wess’s Challenge Ahead

Wess faces a significant challenge in the upcoming general election, where he will compete against the Republican nominee, Representative Barry Moore. Moore, who received support from former President Donald Trump, won the Republican nomination by defeating former Navy SEAL sniper Jared Hudson.

Alabama’s Political Climate

Democrats have found it difficult to win Senate elections in Alabama, except for Doug Jones’ notable special election victory in 2017. Prior to Jones, it had been over 30 years since a Democrat succeeded in a Senate election in the state.

This year, Tuberville, known for his tenure as Auburn University’s head football coach, has opted to pursue the governor’s office instead of a Senate re-election campaign.
