Former House member Cori Bush’s attempt to regain her seat faced a setback as Rep. Wesley Bell secured a significant victory for establishment Democrats. Bell defeated Bush, a former Black Lives Matter organizer and member of the Democratic Socialists of America, for the second time since 2024.
Bell, previously a Ferguson City Council member and county prosecutor, positioned himself as a pragmatic yet progressive choice for Missouri’s 1st Congressional District. His victory highlights a rift between establishment Democrats and the more insurgent left within the party.
Bush attributed her 2024 loss to substantial funding from pro-Israel groups outside her district. She repeated similar accusations in the recent campaign, claiming Bell was influenced by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC). Bush criticized Bell’s response to a 2025 tornado disaster, alleging he traveled to Israel funded by Trump’s donors shortly afterward. Despite her efforts, these criticisms did not significantly impact Bell’s support.
Bush previously joined a group of Democratic Socialists of America-backed candidates challenging establishment Democrats nationwide. These candidates often presented a more leftist agenda, which some Republicans view as a sign of the Democratic Party shifting too far from mainstream American perspectives.
With this primary win, Bell is favored to secure another term in the upcoming November elections for the predominantly Democratic district.
