Essential Nail Care Tips for Maintaining Healthy Nails

Caring for your fingernails and toenails often gets overlooked. Professional nail technician Titilayo Bankole emphasizes that nails need attention, just like teeth and hair.

Dr. Shari Lipner, a dermatologist at Weill Cornell Medical Center, points out that nails play a crucial role in daily tasks. She says without nails, simple actions like picking up coins or buttoning shirts become difficult.

Maintaining Strong, Healthy Nails

To preserve nail health, practice good hygiene and regularly evaluate your nails. Avoid habits like picking at cuticles or overexposing nails to water, as these can lead to brittle nails and painful hangnails.

“Many people damage their nails by drying them out or picking at their cuticles,” says Bankole.

Dr. Lipner warns that untreated fungal infections are highly contagious and can spread to other skin areas.

Healthy Nail Habits

  • Cuticle Care: Avoid trimming or aggressively pushing back cuticles. Cuticles are protective barriers that prevent bacteria and fungi from entering.
  • Nail Trimming: Cut nails straight across to prevent ingrown nails. Use glass or crystal nail files for smoothing edges.
  • Buffing: Light buffing is okay, but excessive buffing can weaken nails.
  • Moisturization: Use cuticle oil and moisturizers to hydrate nails and surrounding skin.
  • Breaks Between Treatments: Give your nails breaks from gels and acrylics to prevent damage.
  • Glove Use: Wear gloves to protect nails from prolonged water exposure.

Nail Health and Overall Well-being

Dr. Dana Stern notes that nails reflect overall health. Changes like whitish nails can indicate health issues, from vitamin deficiencies to liver disease.

“Odd or lasting nail changes should be discussed with a dermatologist or primary care doctor,” says Stern.
