Disneyland to Replace Autopia Ride Engines with Electric Motors

Disneyland will replace gas-powered engines in the Autopia ride with electric motors by early next year. If the park fails to adhere, the attraction may face closure, as reported by local sources.

By February 2027, Disneyland must meet California’s strict emissions standards, as detailed by the Orange County Register. Autopia, a pillar of Anaheim’s theme park since its debut in July 1955, remains the sole original ride in Tomorrowland.

Honda sponsors the ride but neglected to certify its engines due to an apparent oversight in 2023, as stated on MouseChat. This led the Disneyland officials to reach out to the California Air Resources Board. In 2024, the board issued a violation, requiring a $56,250 fine and engine modifications.

Disney clarified that the error did not impact the environment.

According to The Los Angeles Times, Disney plans to transition the vehicles to electric power by next year. The company stated, “As the industry progresses to alternative fuels, we are creating a roadmap to electrify this attraction and assess technology for gas engine conversion in the coming years.” This statement was made in 2024.

Disney imagineers are engaged in the design and development of the electric ride vehicles, as per the Orange County Register. Though connected to a track, riders control the speed, with a maximum of 6 mph.

The park has not announced specific dates for the ride’s temporary closure or reopening for refurbishment. Fox News Digital has contacted Disneyland for further comments.
