DHS Directs ICE to Deport Undocumented Immigrants Voting Illegally

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has issued a directive to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to deport undocumented immigrants who participate in American elections. This action comes in response to those living in the country unlawfully and fraudulently casting ballots.

A letter from DHS General Counsel James Percival highlights the need for enforcing stricter penalties under the Immigration and Nationality Act, which mandates the removal of individuals who illegally vote. The directive aims to preserve the integrity of America’s electoral processes and ensure fair elections.

Illegal voting and falsely claiming U.S. citizenship are trends seen as significant threats to democracy. Percival emphasized the indispensability of free and honest elections, quoting President Trump on the necessity of properly counting votes without illegal interference.

This measure supports policies introduced in March 2025 by President Trump through an executive order titled “Preserving and Protecting the Integrity of American Elections.” This order proposed extensive changes to voter registration standards, the rules governing voting machines, and mail-in ballot procedures. The administration’s primary goal remains to prevent non-citizen voting and rectify systemic errors.

Several cases have emerged of undocumented immigrants facing charges for illegal voting activities. Notably, a Mauritanian named Mahady Sacko was accused of voting in every presidential election since 2008. In another instance, four noncitizens were charged in May for allegedly voting in multiple federal elections and making false claims when applying for U.S. citizenship.

These directives align with an earlier announcement by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services in August 2025. The updated policy manual now prevents green card holders who have voted or registered to vote from acquiring citizenship.
