Payton explained, “Expecting our starters to play around 15 plays. Bo won’t play in this game. He’ll play next week.” Nix underwent surgery on his right ankle during the offseason, an injury that kept him out of the AFC Championship Game, which the Broncos lost. This cautious strategy for Nix, especially in the preseason opener, appears wise.
Intense Battle for Backup QB
With Nix sidelined, attention turns to the competitive battle for the backup quarterback position during the training camp. Stidham and Sam Ehlinger will use the game against Atlanta to showcase their abilities. Payton indicated each would handle a half, with Stidham starting.
The role of backup QB is crucial for contenders like Denver. Last season, Nix led the team to a 14-3 record, securing the AFC’s top seed. Denver was on track for its first Super Bowl since 2015 before Nix’s ankle injury in the divisional triumph over Buffalo.
