Democratic Representative Jasmine Crockett’s Uncertain Support for James Talarico

Democratic Representative Jasmine Crockett expressed hesitation in fully supporting James Talarico’s campaign for the Texas Senate. Speaking with The Dallas Morning News, Crockett mentioned she has ‘no idea’ about her involvement in his campaign.

This uncertainty follows a competitive primary in March, where Talarico emerged as the Democratic nominee over Crockett. He is set to face Republican Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton in November’s general election. When questioned about the extent of her support, Crockett reiterated her focus on down-ballot races across the nation.

Crockett noted, ‘I am more focused on down-ballot races in general.’

The relationship between Crockett and Talarico appears tense. She described her invitation to the Texas Democratic Party convention as an ‘afterthought.’ Despite receiving a call she hasn’t returned, Crockett is unsure of the invitation’s intent. Party officials contradicted her, asserting she was invited since March. Kendall Scudder, the Party Chair, affirmed her standing invite.

Talarico’s campaign disclosed that he proposed Crockett as a keynote speaker at the convention. Crockett questioned whether Democrats—especially Black voters—were fully behind Talarico. She pointed out the absence of a Black candidate in major statewide races, which could influence voter enthusiasm, according to The Dallas Morning News.

‘I’ve not heard a bunch of kumbaya,’ Crockett stated. ‘People don’t seem convinced at this point, but there’s a lot of time between now and November.’

Political science professor Grant Davis Reeher from Syracuse University commented on the scenario, highlighting possible future dysfunctions within the party. He criticized Crockett’s public remarks as damaging, lacking affirmation for Talarico’s candidacy, potentially undermining Democratic efforts.

‘Crockett’s absence of praise or support doesn’t help the party’s cause,’ Reeher said.

Despite differing views, both Crockett and Talarico emphasize the defeat of Republicans in November as a priority. Crockett’s engagement in Talarico’s campaign could test Democratic unity as they aim to transform primary momentum into a unified statewide strategy.
