Democratic Party Faces Internal Tensions Over Socialist Influences
Democrat Representative Josh Gottheimer has raised concerns about the influence of far-left socialist factions within the Democratic Party. He highlighted the rise of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) in recent primary elections, emphasizing the need for mainstream leaders to actively reject radical progressive policies to maintain voter trust and succeed in competitive congressional elections.
During a conversation with Fox News, Gottheimer urged insurgent socialists within the party to establish their own party. He accused them of attempting to “hijack” the Democratic Party and use it as a vessel for their “communist,” “anti-American,” and open-border platform.
Gottheimer, who serves on the House Intelligence Committee and is a leader of the moderate Blue Dog Coalition, stated, “The Democratic Socialists of America are not Democrats. They’re socialists. It’s unacceptable to me if they try to take over our party.” He reaffirmed his commitment to being a “commonsense Democrat” and dismissed the DSA’s compatibility with the Democratic Party’s principles.
He criticized DSA members for supporting values that are inconsistent with Democratic leadership. According to Gottheimer, DSA members have been seen supporting the Communist Manifesto and ideologies contrary to American values. He referred to clips from a DSA convention in Chicago, where attendees advocated for removing ICE from campuses and viewed socialism as aligned with Christian Church teachings.
Rep. Cuellar’s Response and Voter Statistics
Representative Henry Cuellar also rejected the DSA agenda, contending that socialists are trying to “use” the Democratic Party. Gottheimer cited statistics to illustrate the disparity in membership between registered Democrats and DSA affiliates, stating that 45 million voters are registered Democrats, compared to 150,000 DSA members.
He opposed party members who have shown openness to DSA-aligned candidates, such as Maine oysterman Graham Platner. However, Ro Khanna, representing Silicon Valley, acknowledged the need for Democratic Party reform to address wealth concentration.
Insurgency Concerns Across Political Spectrum
Gottheimer pointed to insurgencies across both major parties, highlighting incompatible ideas being introduced. He referenced James Carville, a Clinton confidant, expressing willingness to disown the party if figures like streamer Hasan Piker were allowed leadership roles.
Former U.S. Marine bomb technician Johnny Joey Jones queried Gottheimer about potentially leaving the party due to leaders embracing socialists. Gottheimer clarified that Hasan Piker is not a Democrat and criticized him for comments attributed to him regarding 9/11.
He explained the DSA’s platform as fundamentally incompatible with Democratic values, calling for clarity on party identity against socialist aspirations. Though Gottheimer has no immediate plans to leave, New Jersey Democrat Jeff Van Drew switched parties during President Trump’s term, showing that party shifts are possible.
Gottheimer represents a district with diverse political landscapes, encompassing both liberal suburbs and Trump-friendly areas. Fox News Digital reached out to the DSA and Piker for comments.
