David Jonsson will be the new Black Panther. Director Ryan Coogler revealed this news at Marvel’s San Diego Comic-Con panel. Jonsson will portray T’Challa’s son in the upcoming Black Panther 3, scheduled for release on December 15, 2028. Coogler is set to return as the director for this third installment.
During the announcement, David Jonsson joined Ryan Coogler onstage. Jonsson expressed gratitude, stating, “Thank you to this amazing family that I have the honor and the privilege and the blessing to join.” He added that he preferred to let the film speak for itself. The crowd responded with enthusiastic applause at the announcement.
Chadwick Boseman originally played T’Challa in the first Black Panther film. Boseman passed away from colon cancer in 2020, during the development of the film’s sequel. Letitia Wright, who played Shuri, T’Challa’s sister, took on a significant role in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
With Jonsson’s casting, there is a symbolic passing of the torch. His character, Prince T’Challa II, was introduced in the second film, and Black Panther 3 will depict his coming of age.
David Jonsson has appeared in several projects, including Stephen King’s The Long Walk, Alien: Romulus, and as Gus Sackey in Industry.
