Couple Scales Empire State Building for Engagement Stunt

A daring pair known for climbing skyscrapers faced legal charges after scaling the Empire State Building’s antenna for an engagement stunt. Prosecutors reported that Ivan Kuznetsov and Angelina Nikolau, who publicly use different names, told police their aim was to make their engagement unforgettable. Charged with reckless endangerment and burglary, their court arraignment revealed some details of their escapade.

Onlookers witnessed the couple climb the antenna, situated 1,454 feet above midtown Manhattan. They unfurled a banner stating, “When the power of love beats the love of power the world knows peace.” After displaying the message, a proposal occurred on a lower ledge, which was documented and shared by Nikolau on social media.

Police delayed their response, waiting for power to the antenna to be turned off before they could ascend safely. Emergency Services Unit officers then climbed 1,250 feet to intercept the couple. The two climbers were stopped as they descended and eventually apprehended.

The documentary “Skywalkers: A Love Story” highlights the couple’s rooftop adventures and romance. Notably, the recent Empire State Building climb posed safety risks and involved breaking a security lock on the restricted 104th floor, which grants antenna access.

The building’s management labeled the climb unauthorized but did not disclose any security breaches regarding the couple’s actions. Visitors to the tower routinely undergo security screening to prevent such incidents.

Released without bail due to New York laws, the couple awaits further legal proceedings. Their lawyer, Jason Krinsky, commented on the uniqueness of the proposal and hinted at tactical legal responses once more evidence is available.

The Empire State Building has a history of unauthorized climbs; however, in 2023, Jared Leto received permission to ascend part of the structure for promotional purposes.
