Golf Channel’s Eamon Lynch has criticized Long Island golf enthusiasts following recent incidents at the U.S. Open. Held at Shinnecock Hills, the event saw unruly behavior from the crowd, prompting Lynch to suggest majors should avoid the region.
During a segment, Lynch stated, “Long Island golf fans are a stain on the game of golf,” following Wyndham Clark’s victory at the U.S. Open. His comments centered on fans heckling Clark, the tournament’s leader, with phrases like “Don’t choke Wyndham” and “Get in the bunker.”
Lynch emphasized that this behavior seemed exclusive to Long Island courses, noting it doesn’t happen at Winged Foot or Baltusrol. The PGA Championship is scheduled for Bethpage Black in 2033, despite previous heckling incidents there involving Rory McIlroy during the Ryder Cup.
McIlroy reportedly faced taunts that disrupted the event, and his wife experienced aggressive behavior, including having a beer thrown at her. Expressing disappointment, McIlroy stated, “Golf should be held to a higher standard.” Lynch argues that similar disturbances are too common on Long Island, considering local fans “predictable” and privileged.
Lynch advocates for stricter measures similar to Augusta National Golf Club’s rules during The Masters. These eliminate phones and enforce zero tolerance. He believes these could remedy the issue.
The atmosphere at Shinnecock Hills portrayed Clark as a villain despite his performance. Known for temper issues, he has been banned from Oakmont, adding to his controversial reputation.
Lynch stresses the importance of decorum at major championships, which he feels Long Island fans lack. He recommends revisiting crowd control standards for future events.
