The race for the Illinois Senate seat in the 42nd District is between Democrat Jared Ploger and Republican Edgardo Perez. This election will determine who succeeds Linda Holmes, D-Aurora, who is retiring after 20 years in the General Assembly.
Jared Ploger’s Platform
Jared Ploger, aged 51, hails from Aurora. He identifies taxes and affordability as key voter concerns. He says constituents express frustration over high property taxes. “People I’ve spoken to are troubled by property tax levels in the 42nd District and want reductions,” Ploger explains. He points out that residents are dissatisfied with current government policies.
Regarding affordability, Ploger notes concerns about housing, water, utilities, and connectivity to data centers. He mentions environmental issues associated with data centers as another voter interest.
If elected, Ploger aims to prioritize infrastructure, living wages, and education funding. He remarks, “Our area’s rapid growth is straining infrastructure.” He emphasizes the need for investment in roads, transportation, and hospitals. Ploger stresses matching wages with living costs.
On education, he underscores the district’s high-performing schools, linking them to property values. He supports exploring new revenue sources, like a millionaires’ tax, to fund education without burdening the middle and lower classes.
Edgardo Perez’s Platform
Edgardo Perez, aged 62, also from Aurora, echoes concerns about taxes and data centers. “Everyone I meet worries about rising taxes,” he observes. Residents question where their tax dollars go and call for more transparency.
Perez notes the apprehension surrounding data centers, particularly their environmental impact and land usage. Despite recognizing the necessity to keep pace with technological growth, Perez wants assurance that the community benefits financially.
He highlights a disconnect between constituents and their representatives, noting many don’t know their state senators. “People want to know who’s representing them,” he states.
If elected, Perez intends to focus on transparency, supporting veterans, and youth opportunities. He champions increasing voter influence on tax decisions through referendums. “Transparency tops my agenda,” Perez states. He values giving the community a choice in financial decisions.
Perez, a strong advocate for veterans, seeks to explore how communities can better support them. He emphasizes the importance of aiding families with children having special needs and addressing their transition into adulthood.
