An effort to curb gun violence and enhance community wellness took center stage during a recent event at Bardwell Residences, located at 301 Weston Ave. in Aurora. Held on Saturday, the four-hour event ‘Lighting the Way to a Safer Aurora’ was organized by Project Safe Aurora with support from the Kane County Health Department, the coalition’s lead agency.
The occasion featured live music, free giveaways including Chromebooks, gas cards, and biometric gun safes, as well as presentations from various speakers discussing safety topics. Elizabeth Nunez, a violence prevention specialist at the Kane County Health Department, emphasized the significance of the event. ‘This addresses community health issues, and violence is a crucial aspect. Project Safe Aurora targets gun violence prevention,’ said Nunez.
She noted the broader impact of gun violence on public health. ‘Gun violence affects not just individuals, but entire communities. Through our efforts, we aim to foster community trust and raise awareness about available resources, as well as promote safe gun storage.’ The initiative is funded by a state grant through the Reimagine Public Safety Act.
‘The focus is on areas with high gun violence, utilizing community-driven data and input to devise strategies specific to each locality,’ Nunez explained. ‘Our coalition has expanded to over 27 organizations, including law enforcement, domestic violence groups, and youth development entities, all collaborating on violence prevention.’
Nunez has been engaging with neighborhood groups this year to inform them about Project Safe Aurora and develop a community safety action plan. A recent event at Bardwell Residences drew attendees eager to hear from keynote speakers, with one stating, ‘It’s essential to bring more awareness to gun control issues.’
Visitors gathered to hear about the initiative’s three core strategies based on data from the Aurora police transparency hub. ‘We assess incident reports monthly and noticed significant violence from the East Side of Aurora, mainly involving people aged 14-24,’ Nunez said. ‘Our approach includes partnering with the East Aurora School District to implement restorative practices, fostering trust between schools and administrators.’
Aurora Ald. Jonathan Nunez, 4th Ward, underscored the importance of the event and collaborations with the Kane County Health Department. ‘Our joint efforts began with discussions about Aurora’s shooting data, revealing a high concentration of incidents. These monthly meetings have focused on ways to reduce gun violence, particularly among youth,’ he affirmed.
Community member Ilda Valdez attended the event out of curiosity and a desire to support local initiatives. ‘Bringing more community awareness is crucial for encouraging people to step up and support law enforcement and social services,’ Valdez remarked. ‘Understanding gun control issues through such sessions is invaluable.’
