Clarification on the Status of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle as Non-Working Royals

King Charles III has formally confirmed the status of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle as non-working royals. This confirmation was issued in writing by Lord Richard Benyon, the Lord Chamberlain, who serves as the official head of the Royal Household.

Background

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex left their roles within the royal family in 2020. They aimed to start a fresh life in the United States, distancing themselves from their royal duties. During their time in America, they made notable criticisms of the Monarchy during a high-profile interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2021 and in Harry’s 2023 memoir, Spare. Despite returning to the U.K. in late August, they continue as non-working royals.

The Lord Chamberlain’s Letter

The letter written by Lord Benyon clarifies the couple’s status. It has been sent to U.K. Government officials, military, and Lord Lieutenants, who represent the monarch regionally. The letter emphasizes that Harry and Meghan’s charitable work is a personal endeavor conducted privately. It states: “Their position is akin to private citizens with commercial and charitable interests.”

The charitable work of the Duke and Duchess is a personal matter for them both and undertaken in their private capacity. It is well known that in January 2020 the Duke and Duchess stepped down from undertaking representative duties on behalf of The Sovereign, and are no longer working Members of The Royal Family. This position, distinct from the State and Royal duties undertaken by the working Royal Family, and with the personal latitude it brings the couple in respect of financial independence and protection of their privacy as they would wish, will continue to be fully respected.

Why It Matters

Speculation arose regarding the couple potentially returning to their previous royal roles. However, the clarity provided by the palace sets expectations for official practices involving them. Information distributed to state bodies confirms no changes; the Duke and Duchess remain in their current status. Furthermore, their formal styles, His and Her Royal Highness, stay in abeyance.

Future Engagements

Harry and Meghan are anticipated to visit charities they previously collaborated with. Media coverage is expected for these events, similar to Harry’s recent trips to the U.K. in July and September last year. Any official inquiries about their engagement protocols or funding should be directed to Buckingham Palace. Security matters will continue under relevant police oversight.
