A python hunter, known on Instagram as Snakeaholic, who is also an experienced alligator wrestler, has achieved a remarkable feat in Puerto Rico. He assisted in capturing what is claimed to be the longest live reticulated python ever caught in the region. This achievement was part of his collaboration with Proyectos Retic, a local group dedicated to studying and handling data on reticulated pythons.
Working together, they successfully caught a python measuring an impressive 18 feet and 4 inches long at El Hippie waterfall in Naguabo, Puerto Rico. The massive snake required the efforts of eight people standing shoulder-to-shoulder to effectively demonstrate its size. The team tracked the python after it was seen strangling a pet cat behind a house. Details about the cat’s fate remain unclear, as the hunters focused on capturing the invasive predator.
Reticulated pythons are an introduced species in Puerto Rico, similar to the Burmese pythons in Florida, Snakeaholic’s home state. This acquisition required substantial tracking skills and about 20 minutes of searching in the jungle before the snake was captured.
“Removing this invasive apex predator is one more step towards restoring the delicate balance of the ecosystem out here in Puerto Rico, and I am proud to be a part of this incredible conservation work!” Snakeaholic expressed.
The task of capturing such species plays a pivotal role in maintaining ecological balance. As highlighted, these snakes pose a significant threat to the environment.
Additionally, Snakeaholic noted the introduction of non-native species is a human error. Efforts by Proyectos Retic and Snakeaholic aim to mitigate this issue.
Kevin Pavlidis, the python hunter, emphasizes the importance of addressing the ecological impact of invasive species. His work with Proyectos Retic reflects a proactive approach to conservation in Puerto Rico.
