Cape Verde’s Remarkable World Cup Journey

The Cape Verde soccer team made an impressive debut at the World Cup, despite not winning a match. Their performance captivated fans, thanks largely to their 40-year-old goalkeeper, Vozinha. His main goal was simply for his mother to see him play, as he competed on the world’s biggest stage.

The team’s run ended in the Round of 32 against Argentina, the defending World Cup champions led by Lionel Messi. The final score was 3-2 after extra time. Vozinha remarked, “We have dignified Cape Verde as a national team in most parts of the world.” Cape Verde held their own against a powerhouse team, showing determination and skill.

Their journey began with a scoreless draw against Spain. This match highlighted the effort made to bring Vozinha’s mother to the United States to see the games. Cape Verde secured two more dramatic draws, allowing them to reach the knockout stage. Their story became even more compelling as they took on Argentina.

The match against Argentina stretched over two and a half hours. Vozinha stood strong against a team ranked No. 1 globally. Cape Verde defender Pico Lopes praised Vozinha, calling him a legendary figure in their football history. Vozinha made several elite saves, including blocking multiple attempts by Messi during crucial moments.

In the 63rd minute, Vozinha stopped a close-range shot from Messi. Later, in the 73rd minute, he deflected a curving free kick aimed for the net. Even during stop-time, he saw through a wall of players to block another free kick. Messi continued his attempts, but Vozinha remained resolute, diving to save more shots.

Cape Verde’s coach, Bubista, acknowledged the difficulty of facing the world champions and one of soccer’s best players. This experience marked their first appearance in the World Cup. The team aims to grow and seize more opportunities against top-tier teams.

As the smallest nation by land area to compete in the World Cup, and with a population 1% the size of Argentina’s, Cape Verde earned $11 million from FIFA for their performance. They gained more than financial rewards; they garnered international support and recognition.

Pico Lopes noted, “Nobody has to ask where Cape Verde is now. They know where we are.” Cape Verde’s presence in the World Cup put them firmly on the global soccer map.
