Billy Donovan Joins San Antonio Spurs as Lead Assistant

The San Antonio Spurs recently completed a remarkable 62-win season, advancing to the NBA Finals with one of the most dynamic young teams in the league. Key players include Victor Wembanyama, Stephon Castle, and Dylan Harper. Wembanyama stands out as a generational talent, earning the Western Conference Finals MVP title. Castle was named the 2025 Rookie of the Year, while Harper secured a spot on the All-Rookie First Team. Notably, all three are under the age of 23.

Despite their success, the Spurs suffered a major setback in the finals. A 29-point lead slipped away in Game 4, followed by a collapse in Game 5. This allowed the New York Knicks to claim victory at the Frost Bank Center. Afterward, head coach Mitch Johnson acknowledged, “We weren’t ready to win an NBA championship.”

Seeking to strengthen their team, the Spurs appointed Billy Donovan as the new lead assistant coach, working under Johnson. Donovan is renowned in basketball circles, having been inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2025. His achievements include back-to-back national championships with Florida in 2006 and 2007 before transitioning to the NBA. His first NBA role was with the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2015, where he led the team to a 55-win season and the Western Conference finals. During his tenure with the Bulls, he led them to only one playoff appearance, resulting in an overall 226-256 record.

Donovan’s move to the Spurs as an assistant coach is unexpected, given that he was a finalist for head coaching positions elsewhere, including with the Orlando Magic. Intriguingly, the Magic job went to Sean Sweeney, who Donovan is now replacing in San Antonio. Sweeney played a crucial role in the Spurs’ success, particularly in helping Wembanyama secure the Defensive Player of the Year award. He remained with the Spurs until their postseason concluded, opening the way for Donovan’s arrival.

At 61, Donovan brings a wealth of experience, with college championships and his Hall of Fame status already achieved. His next challenge is capturing an NBA title, and he joins a Spurs team well-positioned to make another strong run. Additionally, Donovan’s presence positions him as a potential successor should the need arise.
