Beagles Rescued from Wisconsin Facility Find New Homes

Many beagles rescued from Wisconsin’s Ridglan Farms are experiencing freedom for the first time. Previously, these dogs were used for laboratory research, but now they are settling into new homes. For them, things like grass, stairs, and affection are novel experiences.

Robert Misseri, co-founder of Paws of War, noted, “They right now don’t even know they’re dogs.” His organization assists in transitioning these dogs to life as pets. Paws of War helps train and place shelter dogs with U.S. military veterans coping with emotional challenges from war. Misseri mentioned that his group took in 10 beagles after their release.

The dogs were released following state investigations revealing possible animal welfare law violations at the facility. This prompted a rescue effort hailed by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as a “major win for animal welfare.” Turning the beagles into beloved pets poses challenges. For example, some dogs are unfamiliar with basic experiences like stepping on grass.

Misseri stated, “They weren’t dogs, they were products. We see them from shaking and not knowing if we’re going to hurt them.”

Jodie Cohen, Director of Adoptions, detailed the group’s approach to assisting these “traumatized little souls.” They work to match dogs with veterans and first responders, teaching them basic skills crucial for adoption. Without prior experience on leashes, each dog requires patient guidance.

Adoptive families receive supplies and the option of free group obedience training. The program is designed to help both the dogs and their adopters recover from trauma and grow in confidence. Misseri remarked, “The lives are being changed on both ends of the leash.”
