Avery Miller: A Standout Softball Season

Avery Miller, the pitcher for Naperville Central, strengthened her game by focusing on both physical and fundamental improvements as she prepared for her junior season. “I hit the gym more,” she explained. “I did last year, but I decided to do it more this year.”

Her dedication was evident, with Miller aiming to go to the gym at least four times weekly and incorporating additional lessons. “And then if I had some extra time, if I want to get some reps in, I’ll go into my garage and throw into a net,” Miller added.

Miller not only focused on pitching but also resumed hitting lessons. “I just put in a bunch of work, and I think it’s really refreshing to see it pay off,” she shared. Her efforts yielded significant results, culminating in her being named the 2026 Naperville Sun Softball Player of the Year. Her performance excelled in both pitching and hitting.

In her third varsity season, Miller achieved a 19-6 record, with three saves and a 1.82 ERA. She tallied 213 strikeouts across 161 2/3 innings and threw seven shutouts. Her remarkable season earned her the title of DuPage Valley Conference pitcher of the year, with an undefeated 13-0 league play record. The Redhawks, with a record of 25-10, won their second consecutive DVC title.

Miller’s prowess was not limited to the mound. Her increased power at bat led to her all-state second-team selection. She hit .392, with team-highs in nine home runs and 34 RBIs, sharing the top spot with sophomore Lacie Williams. “She had some pretty good stats as a sophomore, but she came back as a much better player,” commented Naperville Central coach Andy Nussbaum. Her walk-off home run against St. Charles East highlighted her improved batting power.

Nussbaum also observed improvements in Miller’s pitching. She managed fewer walks and more strikeouts, with Naperville Central’s defense providing strong support. “The thing that I noticed the most was she pitched pretty tough with runners on base,” Nussbaum noted. “It’s a credit to her mental toughness.”

The Redhawks improved their record with five more wins than the previous year, claiming their first regional title since 2015. “I think me personally, just at first, I was a bit doubtful,” Miller admitted, “but overall, I’m really proud of all of us for the season.”

Senior shortstop Natalie Lau, who has committed to Penn, praised Miller’s leadership and reliability. “She’s definitely a leader in our energy and our team chemistry,” Lau said. “It’s really great to see her succeed, especially for the last three years.”

The collective efforts and Miller’s outstanding performance marked a successful season for Naperville Central, with visible progression in Miller’s skills paying dividends for the team.
