As NFL training camp kicks off, the Atlanta Falcons confront quarterback challenges. Tua Tagovailoa, acquired to compete with Michael Penix Jr. for the starting position, is sidelined due to a “flare-up” of an undisclosed injury. Head coach Kevin Stefanski informed reporters of Tagovailoa’s condition, mentioning a tight back as per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Despite the setback, Stefanski expects Tagovailoa to return to practice soon. Meanwhile, Penix Jr. is recuperating from a torn ACL sustained last season and could miss up to four weeks of training camp. To strengthen the quarterback lineup, the Falcons signed veteran Cooper Rush.
Earlier, the team released Trevor Siemian, leaving undrafted rookie Jack Strand as the only fully healthy quarterback. Although Penix participated in individual drills and 7-on-7 exercises, he is yet to engage in complete team activities.
Penix Jr. acknowledges his extensive injury history, having experienced four season-ending injuries at Indiana before transferring to Washington. He shared his cautious approach, stating, “The last thing I want to do is rush back just to get back on the field.” This marks his third ACL injury, prompting a careful recovery plan.
Stefanski understands the unpredictability of injuries, especially at camp’s start. The Falcons present an intriguing team to follow this season. With new leadership, including Matt Ryan as team president, they aim to return to playoff contention after last reaching the postseason in 2017. The team has not managed a .500 record or better since then.
