Antonio Banks Leads Marian Catholic with Game-Changing Plays

Marian Catholic’s Antonio Banks is known for his ability to deliver big plays. Whether launching into long runs or turning short passes into major touchdowns, Banks is always on the move. He remains unsatisfied after each play, relentlessly pursuing another chance to shine on defense.

Banks derives his energy from a deep sense of team spirit. “I think about my team before myself,” he expressed. “I want to offer my teammates, especially other seniors, opportunities to play in games we haven’t experienced yet, see new places like playoffs, and perform on larger stages.”

His performance on Saturday proved vital in Marian Catholic’s quest to secure its first playoff spot since 2019. Banks caught 13 passes for 226 yards, resulting in two touchdowns. Despite these efforts, Marian Catholic struggled in the 30-21 loss to St. Viator at Forest View Stadium, suffering from a slow initial phase.

“Tony’s been pouring everything out on the field,” Coach Nick Lopez stated. “His energy is infectious and it gives his teammates strength. He makes plays in every aspect — offense, defense, special teams.”

Freshman quarterback Caleb Wilson supported the team by completing 21 out of 36 passes, totaling 303 yards and securing three touchdowns. Both Banks and Wilson set new records for the Spartans in this game. Banks often served as a reliable receiver for Wilson, easing his transition into varsity games.

“Playing with Banks is straightforward,” Wilson shared. “When options close, I find No. 6’s hands in the air, and passing to him often results in crucial gains.”

St. Viator’s Jax Baker achieved two touchdowns in the game, propelling his team to an early 16-0 lead. As the first half neared its end, Banks caught a deep pass from Wilson and ran 70 yards to score a key touchdown, narrowing the score gap.

Banks capitalized on this momentum, scoring a 55-yard touchdown and demonstrating versatile defense skills. His commitment is evident, as he stated, “I knew we needed energy and a spark to initiate a comeback. I saw my quarterback under pressure, found open space, and seized the opportunity.”

Looking ahead, Marian Catholic requires two victories to enter playoffs, though achieving three wins ensures a more secure path. The team faces challenging games against Nazareth and Providence, leading to a decisive encounter against Leo in Week 9.

Banks anticipates the upcoming trials with optimism. “It’s a valuable opportunity to demonstrate what my team can achieve. We can showcase our potential and make an impact.”

Banks first discovered his football passion in seventh grade, transitioning from baseball. “I wanted to try football after noticing games nearby,” he recalled. “The first time they threw the ball to me, I went 90 yards — I knew this was for me.”
