London saw a large-scale disruption over the weekend as anti-migrant protesters blocked roads leading to the Port of Dover. These protests, involving hundreds of participants wearing masks and dressed in black, caused significant traffic backups, affecting both ferry passengers and freight movements. The demonstrators chanted slogans like ‘stop the boats’ and ‘Christ is king’ while carrying national flags.
The Kent Police described this as a ‘spontaneous protest’ and did not make any arrests. However, local Labour lawmaker Mike Tapp criticized this characterization. He argued the protest seemed organized, raising concerns about police preparedness and intelligence gathering. He suggested the involvement of additional officers during future events might be necessary.
The Patriot Platform, a far-right protest group, claimed responsibility for the demonstration. The group was led by Daniel Thomas, also known as Danny Tommo, a social media influencer with connections to other right-wing activists. Post-protest, Thomas celebrated the event’s execution and hinted at more powerful actions in the future.
Dover has long been a focal point in Britain’s migrant debate. Since 2021, nearly 200,000 migrants have crossed the English Channel. The number of crossings has decreased this year yet remains a contentious political issue. The UK government denounced the Dover protest due to the travel disruption caused. Nigel Farage, leader of the Reform UK party, also criticized the protests for the use of balaclavas.
Continued Tensions in Portsmouth
The protest in Dover was followed by another anti-migrant demonstration in Portsmouth. After a boat carrying 140 migrants was intercepted, protesters gathered in the city. They confronted police as authorities brought the migrants to shore and attempted to transport them to a processing facility. Several protesters tried to impede buses transporting migrants, but police managed to keep them clear.
Emma Reynolds, a lawmaker and current cabinet member, condemned the protesters’ actions as intimidating and thuggish. Migration has become a political flashpoint in Britain, with protests becoming more frequent over the last two years. Places housing asylum seekers have seen disorder and violence during such protests.
Tommy Robinson, a far-right figure, has drawn large crowds in protests regarding migration. In 2025, he was joined remotely by Elon Musk encouraging his supporters. Despite a reduction in migrant arrivals this year, activists continue to highlight migration to maintain public attention on the issue. The UK government has struggled with managing undocumented migrants, a challenge impacting both Conservative and Labour governments.
