A Personal Battle with Cancer: Lessons Learned and Living with Hope

For eighteen months, I’ve faced the reality of a stage 4 cancer diagnosis at 40. It’s a journey that started with a cancer of the appendix in February last year. I’m a mother to a three-year-old and have worked as a journalist at Fox News for 16 years. My diagnosis aligns with a rising trend of adults under 50 facing cancer.

Unexpected Challenges

Always health-conscious, my cancer diagnosis shocked me and my family. It felt especially unexpected after a rare pregnancy-related diagnosis two years prior. Abdominal pains in summer 2023 quickly led to an emotional battle against cancer.

Since then, I’ve been on a path of self-discovery, learning about resilience and faith. Every day poses the question of endurance, but my daughter’s presence motivates me.

Adapting to Treatment

A year and a half in, with 24 chemotherapy rounds completed, I sought a second opinion at MD Anderson Cancer Center. They proposed a necessary surgery in February, from which I’m still recovering. The cancer persists, but new treatment plans offer hope.

Lifestyle changes, including outdoor activities and health-focused habits, help maintain my physical and mental well-being. Our family embraced moments of joy and learned not to delay enjoying life.

Lessons and Gratitude

Cancer taught me to value each day and remain engaged with life’s beauty. I continue figure skating for solace, a reminder that like skating, life requires resilience despite falls.

I reflect on the support I’ve received from others, including those who have conquered cancer. I am thankful for medical teams who tirelessly explore treatment options, even for rare cancers like mine.

Traveling to Texas, despite missing my daughter, rejuvenates my bond with my husband. We’ve found comfort in new experiences and traditions, bringing home mementos like cowgirl boots for our daughter.

Focusing on Today

While worries about the future linger, I strive to stay present in today. Fear doesn’t dictate my life; gratitude shields me from negative thinking. It’s a lesson in managing the feelings of uncertainty with faith.

Despite moments of weakness, tears, and frustration, I push against fear. Strength comes unexpectedly, and amidst challenges, I remain a supportive wife and mother, focused on love and the little joys.

Advice for Challenging Times

Initial advice from my brother emphasized handling life’s adversities with grace. His words, “it’s not about what happens to you but how you handle it,” resonate deeply. I aim to live by this wisdom, seeing cancer as a manageable life setback.

With ongoing dedication to health in body and spirit, coupled with outdoor enjoyment, creativity, and community, I continue to embrace my roles as sister, daughter, and friend. Most importantly, I treasure being a wife and mother to my cherished daughter.
