The sports world is mourning the loss of Claude Lemieux, a two-time Stanley Cup champion, who passed away at the age of 60 on Thursday. His death came unexpectedly, just days after he carried the torch at the Montreal Canadiens’ home arena during the team’s Game 3 matchup against the Hurricanes. Wearing his iconic No. 32 Canadiens sweater, Lemieux was seen smiling and carrying a flame towards the rink.
News of Lemieux’s passing spread quickly, leading to an outpouring of tributes. Among those remembering Lemieux was his daughter, who highlighted his significant impact on the hockey community. Claude Lemieux appeared at the Montreal Bell Centre for Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Final shortly before his death.
On Instagram Stories, Claudia Lemieux shared a heartfelt message, reposting a New Jersey Devils tribute to her father and adding her own words: “No words to express the level of devastation we feel. I love you forever daddy. Forever your only girl.” Brendan Lemieux, Lemieux’s son, also paid tribute by sharing a family photo. He wrote, “I love you dad! My son’s favorite person is going to watch from above for a while. We will see you.” Brendan, like his father, pursued a career in hockey and played in the NHL, most recently with the Carolina team in the 2023-24 season.
Lemieux was known for scoring one of the most iconic goals in Canadiens history as a rookie in 1986. He made a legendary backhand goal against Hartford goaltender Mike Liut in Game 7 of the second round. His impact on the sport was honored during the Colorado Avalanche’s 30th anniversary celebration of their 1995-1996 season.
Lemieux grew up in Mont-Laurier, Quebec. Former Canadiens center Doug Gilmour reminisced about Lemieux’s distinct ability to frustrate opponents while earning the admiration of teammates, a quality that shone during the 1989 Stanley Cup Final. “He was a pain to play against, but you wanted him on your team,” Gilmour said.
