Tim Ream on the Importance of the 2026 FIFA World Cup for U.S. Soccer

Playing for Charlotte FC, Tim Ream anticipates the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup with high hopes for the U.S. Men’s National Team. The tournament will be hosted by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, aiming not only for commendable performances but also to ignite a passion for soccer among Americans. Despite the successes of the women’s national team, there’s an ongoing debate about the future of American soccer audiences.

Tim Ream says, “I have no doubt in my mind that we can win in a knockout stage game. I have no doubt that we can win multiple games in the knockout stages.”

Ream has been a crucial defender with Charlotte FC in Major League Soccer. If selected for the final 26-man roster, he hopes to challenge the critics who claim the U.S. is not a soccer nation. At 38, Ream played every match in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, contributing to the second-youngest team at the event. However, they were eliminated in the Round of 16 by the Netherlands, and failed to qualify for the 2018 tournament.

Reflecting on past World Cups, Ream recalls, “At the last World Cup, none of us had played. We had one guy who had played in a World Cup previously.” The team now has a better grasp on what’s required for success. Ream remembers the excitement of the 1994 World Cup when he was just six years old, held in the U.S., which laid the foundations for Major League Soccer.

If selected, Ream is prepared to play any role necessary: starting every game, making tactical plays, or providing leadership behind the scenes. He recognizes the pressure on this year’s squad to further strengthen soccer’s growth in the U.S.

Ream emphasized, “People want to believe that [soccer in America] is going to continue to grow and that [the 2026 World Cup] will be an even bigger catalyst than 1994.”

Ultimately, Ream believes success both on and off the pitch is vital in inspiring fans and aspiring players across America. He hopes the event fosters a deep appreciation for soccer among the country’s youth, injecting enthusiasm into the sport’s future.
