Gasoline and Energy Costs Rise, Affecting Inflation

Inflation and Energy Prices

The personal consumption expenditures (PCE) price index, favored by the Federal Reserve to measure inflation, rose by 0.5% last month. Compared to September 2025, it was up 3.6%. Energy costs, including gasoline, surged by 9.2% from August to September, following a 4.4% increase from July to August. This marks an upward trend in gasoline and energy prices in six of the nine months this year.

The ongoing war in Iran has influenced these spikes due to restrictions on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz by the Islamic Republic. Meanwhile, food and beverage prices remained stable for the second consecutive month. Since early 2025, these prices have not increased by more than 0.5% month over month.

Impact on Midterm Elections

Higher energy costs have contributed to affordability concerns becoming a priority in the 2026 midterm elections. However, voters are not uniformly concerned about identical expenses. A recent poll highlighted that the economy, healthcare, and the war in Iran are the primary issues for U.S. voters in the upcoming elections.
