The New York Knicks are reportedly facing tensions related to a possible behind-the-scenes divide. Stephen A. Smith claims team owner James Dolan is displeased with players concerning a potential visit to the White House. This allegation arises as New York undertakes its title defense following the NBA championship win, their first since 1973.
The situation appears to be tied to Dolan’s connection with President Donald Trump. Trump attended Game 3 of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden in June, sitting alongside Dolan as the Knicks competed against the San Antonio Spurs. Notably, this marked the first occasion where a sitting U.S. president attended an NBA Finals game.
Smith noted: “This is what I’ve been hearing, and I’m going to say it. Don’t know how much truth there is to it because I haven’t heard from the players directly. But one of the things that people have been talking about around New York City and around Madison Square Garden is that the climate was a little bit different.”
Smith speculates that Dolan might be upset due to potential opposition from some players regarding the White House visit. He criticized the owner, describing him as “a walking embodiment of petulance.” In addition, Smith aired concerns about potential long-term consequences for New York, indicating Dolan might become complacent following the team’s championship success.
Smith commented: “He’s that kind of guy. He is petty enough to have an attitude because he’s tight with Trump and wants to go to the White House.” However, the claim hasn’t been authenticated. Knicks head coach Mike Brown stated in September that the organization was still deliberating the visit and would reach a collective decision.
On the court, New York has encountered challenges in the initial phase of its title defense. The Knicks opened the season with three consecutive losses before securing a win against the Detroit Pistons, 111-97. Karl-Anthony Towns accomplished 27 points and 20 rebounds, while Jalen Brunson contributed 23 points. Upcoming, the Knicks are scheduled to play against the Chicago Bulls.
