Ravens Struggle Against Bengals Highlights Season Concerns

The Baltimore Ravens suffered a significant defeat, losing 35-13 to the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 7. The game took a turn for the worse in the second half as the Ravens managed to squander a 13-0 halftime lead, allowing an impressive 35 unanswered points by the Bengals. This collapse equals the most points they’ve ever conceded in a second half, dropping their record to 4-3 and 0-2 in games against AFC North teams this year. With these results, the Ravens find themselves at the bottom of the division.

Wink Martindale, a former defensive coordinator for the Ravens, recently commented on the aftermath of this loss. He cautioned that if Baltimore fails to improve in their upcoming game against the Buffalo Bills, the implications could be severe. Martindale criticized the team’s leadership, observing that some players prioritized personal decisions over demonstrating ‘football character’. He stressed the need for the team to reassess their approach, stating, “The leaders on that team are not representing the Ravens of old. Watching the defense, there are players making business decisions, especially the so-called leaders. They need to dig deep and find some football character there in that locker room. Everybody wants to express themselves off the field instead of on it, and that’s a losing formula.”

“If the Ravens don’t beat the Bills in Buffalo, there’s trouble brewing. I think there’s gonna be lineup changes and it could go deeper than that,” Martindale added.

The Ravens’ season thus far has been plagued by inconsistency, particularly their failure to maintain performance levels throughout all four quarters. Baltimore often builds early leads, only to falter in the second half, as seen in their match against the Bengals. In that game, the defense allowed wide-open receivers, missed tackles, and showed limited resistance to Joe Burrow. Currently, the Ravens concede an average of 23.9 points per game and have been outscored 48-0 in the second halves of their last two games.

The focus now shifts to their upcoming challenge against the 5-1 Buffalo Bills, who are fresh off a bye week. Josh Allen, the Bills’ quarterback, poses a significant threat due to his ability to capitalize on any defensive mistakes made by Baltimore.

This game could represent a crucial moment for coach Jesse Minter and the Ravens. Another loss could leave the team with a 4-4 record, further dampening their playoff aspirations within the intensely competitive AFC. The anticipated return of quarterback Lamar Jackson, after missing three games due to a high ankle sprain, brings hope. Jackson’s dual-threat prowess can aid in sustaining offensive drives and competing with the Bills’ strong offense. However, addressing the defensive problems remains crucial. Sunday presents an opportunity for the Ravens’ defense to prove their capability in hindering one of the league’s top offenses.
