Jordan Security Forces Capture Suspects in Church Attack

Amman, Jordan — Jordanian security forces apprehended three men on Monday in connection with a deadly attack on a Greek Orthodox church. This assault resulted in nine fatalities and more than two dozen injuries.

The Public Security Directorate reported that the suspects were captured after a shootout at dawn, during which all three were wounded. The operation took place in Karak governorate, located south of Jordan’s capital, Amman. Fortunately, no security personnel were harmed.

Karak, while predominantly Muslim, hosts a minority Christian population. The attack occurred on Friday during a funeral service at a Greek Orthodox church in Hammoud village. Three attackers were reportedly involved. Following the incident, around 3,000 individuals attended a funeral on October 25, 2026, to honor the victims of the terrorist assault that transpired two days earlier.

“The security services have fulfilled their duties, resulting in the capture of those who carried out this terrorist act,” Jordan’s Interior Minister Mazen Al-Faraya stated during a phone interview with state TV Al-Mamlaka. He noted that the attackers resisted fiercely against the security forces but were eventually subdued and taken into custody despite sustaining significant injuries.

A photograph from Saint George’s Greek Orthodox Church shows the aftermath, with visible bloodstains where gunmen opened fire during the funeral.

The directorate emphasized that terrorism has no place within the country, asserting that the suspects faced their just fate. However, they did not disclose the identities of the suspects or imply any connections to Islamist militant groups.

King Abdullah II has issued a directive for authorities to confront these “outlaws of Islam” decisively and prevent any attempts to disrupt the unity of the Jordanian people.
