The Journey to Hearing
After four years of hearing loss, Titan can now hear his parents’ voices and his own laughter. Born in 2021 to Kaitlynn Johnson, Titan was soon diagnosed with bilateral sensorineural hearing loss. He could only detect about 30% of normal hearing capacity. His mother, Kaitlynn Johnson from Florida, shared the uncertainty she faced initially about his future.
Despite challenges, Titan’s parents were determined to give him the best possible life. Hearing loss impacted Titan’s speech development profoundly. At one point, his preschool advised against moving him to kindergarten, as he was behind on nursery rhymes and ABCs.
Life-Changing Moment
In October 2025, Titan’s life changed; he received hearing aids. A video captured by Johnson shows Titan’s first reaction to hearing sounds clearly. The audiologist initially lowered the volume to avoid overwhelming him. His laughter upon hearing prompted tears of joy from his parents.
Johnson shared her overwhelming joy, understanding that Titan’s life would differ with hearing aids. His laughter continued as he discovered new sounds, finally hearing his parents’ voices clearly.
Understanding the Condition
Bilateral Sensorineural Hearing Loss occurs due to damage or abnormalities in the inner ear or auditory nerve pathways. It’s the most common permanent hearing loss in children, ranging from mild to profound. According to the CDC, over 6,000 infants born in 2022 had permanent hearing loss, affecting 1-2 infants per 1,000 births in the U.S.
Developmental Impact
Audiologist Kira Savin explains how hearing loss affects speech, language acquisition, and development. Challenges include difficulty distinguishing speech sounds, pronunciation issues, and slower vocabulary development. These hurdles impact learning, social interaction, and education.
Savin emphasizes that hearing loss need not limit cognitive potential. With hearing aids, speech therapy, and family support, affected children can still achieve their potential.
Progress with Hearing Aids
Titan wears his hearing aids daily, removing them only for sleep, baths, water activities, or a break. His development has advanced significantly within a year. He attends speech therapy twice weekly and continues to improve. A TikTok video of Titan testing his hearing aids garnered over 1.4 million views and 196,300 likes, touching many hearts.
Message of Hope
For Johnson, watching Titan experience the world through hearing aids is rewarding. She hopes Titan’s story can inspire others. Her message is about hope and trust in the face of adversity.
“The message we’d like to share is that even through adversity and uncertainty, having a firm foundation in who we place our hope and trust in—regardless of the outcome—is what matters most.”
