Princess Diana worried that Prince Harry might struggle to find his place within the royal family. This concern emerged due to Harry growing up in the shadow of his older brother and future king, Prince William. According to a royal expert, Diana’s concerns are highlighted once more with the upcoming documentary ‘Diana Unheard.’ This documentary features undisclosed audio from Diana’s secret conversations with her friend Dr. James Colthurst in 1991.
Producers of the documentary revealed that these recordings were shared in Andrew Morton’s 1992 biography, ‘Diana: Her True Story.’ The audio includes Diana discussing her sons, the royal succession, her troubled marriage with then-Prince Charles, and other aspects of royal life.
While speaking with Fox News Digital, royal expert Christopher Andersen shared insights on the recordings that could unveil Diana’s longstanding concerns about her sons’ different futures. Diana was often worried that Harry might feel ‘overshadowed’ by his brother, the future king. Even young William was aware of this, as was evident in his last conversation with Diana before her untimely death.
Diana passed away in August 1997 at age 36 due to a car accident in Paris, France. Her partner, Dodi Fayed, and the driver, Henri Paul, also died in the crash. Before her death, Diana spoke with William about a solo photocall for his third year at Eton College, expressing concerns that Harry might feel overlooked.
Andersen noted that Diana had a strong belief in William’s potential as a future king but was cautious about the monarchy’s influence on Harry. Diana described William as wise and mature, while she was uncertain of how Harry would adapt to being in his brother’s ‘formidable shadow.’
Despite concerns, Diana deeply believed in the bond between her children. She felt that, regardless of challenges, they would face them together. Royal expert Kinsey Schofield echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that Diana’s focus was on the pressures of royal life affecting them individually more than potential estrangement.
Amid public attention, Harry was once a beloved figure, notable for his accomplishments, like his military career and founding the Invictus Games. Schofield indicated that Harry enjoyed opportunities William could not, including pursuing his own interests and building a humanitarian career.
Both Andersen and Schofield posited that Diana might have had mixed feelings about Harry’s later decision to leave royal duties. Despite her rebellious spirit, Diana maintained a strong sense of duty and believed in Harry’s significant role within the monarchy.
Hilary Fordwich, another royal expert, advised against interpreting Diana’s past concerns based on recent events. She emphasized that Diana continued her royal duties even after her separation from Charles in 1992.
In retrospect, royal experts suggest that Diana would have been heartbroken at the current rift between William and Harry. She ardently wished for her sons to be happy and maintain a close relationship. Diana’s legacy, as expressed in her final conversations, resonates with her desire for both sons to be compassionate leaders.
